Firefighters confirm one child was found dead in the charred remains of a duplex fire in Tacoma.

Heartbroken family members say the 3-year-old child who died in the fire was named Nehemiah; his nickname was “Little Nemo.”

The fire began around 3:45 p.m. Wednesday in the 6400 block of South Tyler Street. Firefighters say when they arrived at the scene, they immediately went into rescue mode as flames and thick smoke engulfed the building.

It’s not clear how many people were inside the duplex at the time. Officials were looking into the possibility that one other person also suffered injuries.

As fire crews put out remaining hot spots, investigators are trying to determine what caused the fire.
